Bombino – Deran

After a period spent enchanting Western audiences and employing Western producers and studios, Tuareg guitar master Bombino (given name, Omara Moctar) touches back down in Africa for his energetic sixth LP Deran. Championed by fans and fellow musicians across the globe for his glowing amalgam of desert blues and Hendrix– and Knopfler-inspired classic rock, the Niger native has enjoyed an impressive run since breaking through with his 2011 album Agadez. Extensive North American tours, U.S. festival appearances, collaborations with members of the Rolling Stones, and two acclaimed albums produced by Americans Dan Auerbach (the Black Keys) and Dave Longstreth(the Dirty Projectors) cemented his reputation as an artistic ambassador of the Tamasheq language and the geopolitical conflicts of his native land.

Imajghane (The Tuareg People) Deran Deran Alkheir (Well Wishes) Tehigren (The Trees ) Midiwan (My Friends) Tenesse (Idleness) Oulhin (My Heart Burns) Adouni Dagh (This Life) Tamasheq (The Tuareg language) Takamba Adouagh Chegren (At The Top of the Mountain)

With DeranBombino largely leaves the West to its own concerns, heading instead to a Moroccan studio in Casablanca to record under the lighter touch of his manager, Eric Herman. The resulting ten-song set comes across as more open, honest, and generally unfiltered than either of his previous two outings. While the struggles of the Tuareg people are addressed on tracks like the hard-edged reggae rock of “Tehigren” and the meditative acoustic-led “Adouni Dagh,” the overall tone of Deran is more optimistic and celebratory. Spry opener “Imajghane” sings the praises of Tuareg resilience while the vibrant “Tamasheq” is a literal love letter to the beauty of his native language. The album’s title itself translates to “best wishes,” a sentiment delivered to a groom on the deeply percussive “Deran Deran Alkheir.” As an addition to Bombino‘s already sterling catalog, Deran is another excellent release and a natural continuation of his distinctive style.

Cat Canteri – Inner North

Singer-songwriter Cat Canteri has been slowly been building herself an impressive career that now numbers three solo albums.
The Only One Out Of My League Fitzroy Bowl Pentridge Wasteland Stand Up And Be My Man How Crazy I've Been Remember The Time Bridget Agnew Tram Stop Take Me Away Make Up Your Mind

The sense of patience, self-determination and the evolution and refinement of her songwriting makes Inner North her most rewarding record to date.

Canteri’s ability to drift between styles is a real strength and the way she does it so seamlessly is a testament to her versatility. Primarily this is an album of contemporary folk music, both electric and acoustic, yet it also draws on indie rock and pop, country music, jazz and languid blues. Opener The Only One is as ragged as she gets, with her ringing Ryan Adams-styled guitar balanced by her warm and rich vocal tone. Canteri’s singing is prominent in the mix throughout this album and it impresses with dips into deep soul on Remember The Time and pure, rollicking country on How Crazy I’ve Been. One of the strongest moments on the album is the exquisitely presented, heart-wrenching tale of Bridget Agnew.

Reminiscent of the sound of Joan Armatrading, Eleanor Friedberger and the occasional flash of Joni Mitchell, Canteri’s album is a wonderful sonic snapshot of Melbourne’s inner north, past and present, through the eyes of the people that inhabit these suburbs.

Ziggy Marley – Rebellion Rises

Rebellion Rises is Ziggy Marley’s seventh studio album as a solo artist. What makes his prolific ongoing output- a new studio release every two years or so- both continually relevant and critically notable is the way in which each latest effort builds on the prior entries in Marley’s illustrious catalog. It’s not that the multiple Grammy-winning singer morphs into a new character, or explores a new genre, so much as it is the unfolding experiences of the introspective journey that the reggae superstar is on; he’s gracious enough, almost reliably compelled, to take us with him.

See Dem Fake Leaders The Storm Is Coming World Revolution Your Pain Is Mine Change Your World I Will Be Glad High On Life Circle Of Peace I Am A Human Rebellion Rises

In the case of this record, it’s less vicarious and free as its predecessors. This is one that’s more a call to action: Marley wants you involved. He has tucked, and sometimes shouted, message into most of his writing over three decades as reggae’s most prominent voice, but often it seemed more reporter, less recruiter. Writing, arranging, and producing this album himself, these ten tracks, with a few exceptions, are rallying cries for humanity. Yes, the cause remains love, but this time Marley is calling to unite all the rebels for the cause.

The album opens with the set’s most scathing indictment as a djembe rattles and horns shred their way through See Dem Fake Leaders. Marley’s son Gideon delivers a spoken-word bridge on The Storm is Coming, an autobiographical tracing of a phone call Ziggy and brother Stephen shared during hurricane season in Miami that plays as a metaphor for an encroaching political climate.

Synth claps and electric guitar lines cycle through World Revolution, that touches on racial discrimination, also marked by a rap on the bridge- this one from an intern, SamuiLL KalonjiMarleydiscovered at his record label office. The lighter empathy of Your Pain is Mine follows, with a verse melody reminding of an earlier Marley cut, Beach in Hawaii. Then, the arresting staccato Change Your World, utilizing the timeless boy-meets-girl backdrop as a metaphor for activism.

Ska-like horns color the bouncy, bright wish list of I Will Be Glad, as one of Rebellion’s sunnier tracks, both musically and lyrically. High on Life is a bit of a throwback, evoking the innocent charm of Marley’s former group, sibling sensations The Melody Makers, then, fittingly welcoming Stephen for the subsequent Circle of Peace, that affirms the cause and petitions the willing to realize their dreams now. With strumming acoustic guitar and delicate piano runs, I Am a Human works to shed the labels of race, religion, and politics, and return the focus to simple humanity.

The titular finale carries something of a core sentiment that has anchored Marley since the beginning. Even in the toughest of times, Ziggy Marley has remained optimistic. The minor-to-major-key shifting within the steady rock of this closer suggests a sense of sunlight emerging from the darkness; that love and peace will win the day.

Rebellion Rises is not an angry record. It is not a bitter record. But, it is not a record of hope, either. The time of hoping for change is a notion Marley considers past due. This is a record of action, and for Ziggy Marley, the time for action is now.

Jerry Jeff Walker – It’s About Time

Throat cancer nearly felled Jerry Jeff Walker last year as he wrapped recording for It’s About Time. That brush with mortality now adds a reflective tinge to the progressive country stalwart’s first album in nearly a decade. Even as his voice settles into a lower key, Walker continues spinning gorgeously easy melodies and true narratives on a life now more front porch than rowdy bars. “It took me years to give it up, but I felt I might lose her love, or myself,” Walker acknowledges on sobriety ode “Rain Song,” reeling hard-earned epiphanies. Opening trifecta “That’s Why I Play,” “California Song,” and “Because of You” all gracefully take stock of what matters, as does a turn on Guy Clark’s “My Favorite Picture of You.” Walker maintains an ear for others’ songs, most notably on dusky ballad “South Coast” and barrel piano roll “Ballad of Honest Sam,” while his son Django’s “Somethin’ Bout a Boat” – covered by Jimmy Buffett – gets a Seventies Hill Country makeover.

Junior Sisk – A Brand New Shade Of Blue

When Junior Sisk decides to take a step back and assess his
musical direction, one must never question his motives again.
Simply put, Brand New Shade Of Blue is the record Junior has
been wanting, needing to make for years. “When I first started
performing professionally, my goal was always to present
traditional bluegrass,” says Junior. “With the loss of so many great,
traditional Bluegrass artists of late—Ralph Stanley, James King,
Dave Evans, and Melvin Goins—I really want to make a strong
effort to keep their sound alive, as well.” That opportunity
presented itself organically when Junior’s long-time band,
Ramblers Choice, had a change in personnel at the end of 2017.
“When Jason Davis and Kameron Keller moved on to create a
new band, I really felt like it was the perfect opportunity to regroup
and put more focus on my original goal. I’ve had these songs
stashed away for a while and they were perfect for this record.
They are modern songs featuring a traditional vocal treatment.”
Junior may very well have made one of this year’s best albums,
possibly the best of his career, with Brand New Shade Of Blue.

A Brand New Shade Of Blue Honey Do List Ain't Nothing Wrong With That The Whiskey And The Guitar The Guilt Was Gone I Heard You Knocking Backwards and Forwards By Now I Would Be Dead She's Just A Memory Henry Clayton Parker God Did Good The Traveling Kind

To do so, he relied on the help of some stellar vocalists who fit his
own style perfectly. Del McCoury sings tenor on “The Guilt Was
Gone,” a sure-fire vocal collaboration that is well overdue. The
sweet songbird voice of Heather Berry Mabe melds with Junior’s
Appalachian sound like none other and creates a match made in
heaven for a duet on “Backwards And Forwards.” And who better
to bring a soulful duet vocal on “God Did Good” than Marty
Raybon with his brother Tim joining in to create a three part
harmony structure. Songwriting stalwart Tim Massey, who has
contributed several great tunes to Junior’s repertoire over the
years, sang tenor on his self-penned “Honey Do List.” And another
award-winning writer, Daniel Salyer, equally known for his high
lonesome sound, rounds out the bulk of the harmony on the
project. But one of the best collaborations is that of Junior and The
Lost And Found’s Allen Mills on “By Now I Would Be Dead.” Noone
performs tongue-in-cheek songs better than Allen Mills and
bringing him into the mix on this song is pure genius. But for all the
highlight tracks featuring guests that make this album special, the
standout star continues to be Junior with his heart for a song that
shows every time he opens his mouth to sing a note. Brand New
Shade Of Blue is quintessential Junior Sisk music and an album
that bluegrass enthusiasts will no doubt embrace with open arms.
Friends, Junior Sisk is back!

Album Notes
‘The Swill Herds’ has no standard 6 string guitars on it. All the leads, hooks and distortion parts you hear are from my ukulele. I wanted to challenge myself and create an album that had a strong ukulele foundation mixed with heavy percussion and bass with a lo-fi, pop twist. My old friend Matthew Vorhies plays accordion on a few tracks, adding breath to the body. It was written, recorded and mixed in my basement in Boise Idaho from January- March 2018.
I threw in an old Pink Floyd song that I have always wanted to cover called Fat Old Sun. I hope I did it some justice.

Jamie Lee Thurston – The Window

Jamie Lee Thurston has an axe to grind.

Givin' up Breathin' Real Man's Woman The Window Killin' Song Like a Rockstar Mystery on a Man Off the Chain The Rebel Drink On I Believe in Angels I'm Too Good for That Drinkin' on Sunday Yardbirds

Music is not a hobby to Thurston. It’s the only thing. The act of performing music is how he enters and relates to the world. And when you watch him live, it’s as if you’re witnessing a red giant of a star form before you, drawing in all of the stardust and matter of the immediate universe to power its very being…even if only for a fraction of time.

Most musicians are great at one, maybe two parts of the musical quagmire, leaning in to those roles so far that the band and the creators and the pizazz surrounding them carry the rest. It is an admirable and well-orchestrated feat, to be sure, and one that’s been perfected for many decades of recorded music and live performance history. Music enthusiasts everywhere applaud their accomplishments, and love them all the same.

Thurston stands out as one of those rare performers that has achieved the next-to impossible: The Quadfecta.

He has perfected the multi-faceted roles of an entertainer, a vocalist, an instrumentalist, and a producer – an accomplishment unknown to most. And while he’s great at all four aspects at any given time, to see him achieve them all at once, live from the stage, is a truly monumental experience.

It stands to reason that all music is good music as long as it finds its way to the one person who enjoys it. And in Thurston’s set, there is truly something for everyone. His performance satisfies even the most varied tastes, covering classic and story-based country, and his exceptional abilities on guitar takes audiences where they least expect to go – on a ride with AD/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, The Doors, Jerry Reed, and Deep Purple, to name a few.

Nine studio albums later, Thurston’s story is a parable of endurance and a triumph over mediocrity. His career started with a white-hot flash bang, and continues to steadily burn, taking him and his fans on a long-haul journey.

His dedication to his craft and his love of entertaining surprises the newest of fans, and continues to thrill those who’ve carried him the whole ride. But, as with every other star-crossed story, it did not happen overnight.

In fact, he’s spent more of his life performing on stage than not, a fact that most people don’t know

Thurston grew up with a milk bottle in one hand and a microphone in the other, “accompanying” his father’s band during rehearsals, and eventually at gigs. He made his first live performance at just three years old.

Anyone can imagine, then, after more than 30 years on the road, that he’s amassed some stories. And boy, has he ever. Fans of Thurston’s, otherwise known as The Thursties, live for the storytime parts of his sets because this is a man that has seen more than most and lived to sing about it.

His talent has taken him through the Nashville music industry and label machine at Warner Brothers, where he turned out singles for Montgomery Gentry, Rodney Atkins and Trace Adkins, including Rodney’s chart-topping fan favorite, “15 Minutes.” And he’s shared stages with country music’s biggest acts, such as the Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, the Dixie Chicks, Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Billy Currington and Charlie Daniels.

He continues to burn up the road, and he’s enjoying his recent entry into Europe and the UK, crossing the pond at every opportunity.

He’ll keep fighting the good fight to play that solid, high-quality country and straight-up rock ‘n’ roll for the people who most want to hear it. And he’ll wield his Les Paul Gold Top as his weapon.

After all this time, he’s just getting started.

Scott Southworth – Hey Hillbilly Singer!

Whiskey soaked, all new, original Traditional Country Music recorded in Nashville TN…no rap, loops or auto-tune. Just real pickers laying it down and going to town! Country Music for grown ups.

Hey Hillbilly Singer! The Honky Tonk in Me Nothing Left to Fight for Anymore Nobody Leaves This World Alive Put Another Quarter in the Ride Wish I Was Here Last Stop in Luckenbach Why Can't Every Day Be Friday Night Cigar Store Indian I Ain't Leaving Town (feat Bobby Marquez) I'll Always Remember This
Album Notes
“Hey Hillbilly Singer!” is the anticipated full length follow up to his successful 2016 Traditional Country release. Scott says “It was amazing to find out that so many people around the world wanted to hear new, original “Old School” Country Music! Once I realized that, it only made sense to hit the studio as soon as possible…I have written tons of this music over the years for myself and I am so excited to share some more with you all!

“To say I was surprised by the success of 2016’s “The Last Honky Tonk In Town” is the understatement of the year!” Almost immediately after it’s August release there were rave reviews across Europe and the UK! Country Music People Magazine named Scott their September 2016 “Honky Tonker Of The Month” and his songs “Whiskey Bottle” and “Whiskey In Heaven” were tied for the #1 spot on the UK’s “Kicking Cuts Chart” as compiled by CMP in September 2016!

In late October that year, Scott’s first official single “Whiskey Bottle” was released to European radio and in November debuted at #27 on the Irish Country Music charts, made it up to #3 on the SwissTex charts as well as being picked up by several BBC UK presenters. The CD made several radio presenters and publications “Top Album Lists of 2016. Scott has been nominated twice (2016 & 2017) by the Academy of Western Artists Awards in the categories of: “Pure Country Album of the Year”, “Pure Country Single of the Year” and “Pure Country Male Vocalist of the Year”.

“Hey Hillbilly Singer!” picks right up where his last CD left off, with high energy Honky Tonk songs, Texas Swingers, Two Steppers, Truck Stop Rockers and Tear in your Beer Ballads that will transport the listener into a dark, neon lit dive bar with sawdust on the dance floor and ice cold long necks in a bucket.

The title track idea was actually born in the studio as another song was being cut: “As we were all listening to my rough guitar vocal reference track, guitarist Brent Mason came around the corner and exclaimed “Hey! Who’s That Hillbilly Singer?” while clapping me on the back. As I drove home that night, Hey Hillbilly Singer just kept rolling around in my head and wouldn’t leave me alone until I got to writing, then called my pal Marc Alan Barnette to help me wrap it up!”

The tongue in cheek “I Ain’t Leaving Town” was never meant to be recorded. “I presented the idea to my co-writer Heino Moeller as a song just to sing at writers rounds because nobody would ever let this on the radio! We were cracking up the whole time we wrote it…but a funny thing happened when we played it out. Everybody would be singing along by the second chorus! One day at a songwriter festival I saw Traditional Country Music recording artist Bobby Marquez in the audience and he was singing at the top of his lungs and cracking up, so I asked if he’d want to record it as a duet (sure that he’d say no thanks) and he jumped right on board!”

When describing the production style incorporated by Scott and Buddy Hyatt, Scott says: “We record fast and loose with the best of the best pickers Nashville has to offer. And given the Pop Country style that’s all the rage in sessions these days, these musicians are energized and excited to dig into the type of music that made them move to Nashville in the first place…that enthusiasm shines through in the recordings and raises my vocal performance as well! We don’t go for perfect…we want emotion and energy. There’s a lot of laughter, friendship and trust in each other in the studio…I hope the listener feels that from the first note to the last!”

Samara Lubelski – Flickers at the Station

Biography:

Samara Lubelski… Songwriter, Singer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Improviser, and Engineer…

With a voluminous musical pedigree, the list of artists (individually and collectively) that Lubelski has played/performed/recorded with, reads out like a best-of the who’s who of the art, noise, free, improv, experimental, etc. Hall of Fame, The Tower Recordings, MV and EE, and Thurston Moore are just a few to mention.

Her first solo outing, 1997’s “In the Valley”, was a major installment in the recorded legacy of experimental string music, a dense exploration of drones and resonance. The Fleeting Skies followed in 2004 with a full-band recording of lush psychedelic folk-rock. Since then, Lubelski has released a wonderfully colorful series of albums: “Spectacular Of Passages” (2005), “Parallel Suns” (2007), “Future Slip” (2009), “Wavelength: (2012), and “The Gilded Raid” (2016).

Ms. Lubelski has also studio-engineered records for Double Leopards, Sightings, and Mouthus, amongst many others. Her current projects include an improvisational duo with Marcia Bassett and a long-standing collaboration with German collective Metabolismus. Additionally, Ms. Lubelski has worked with the prolific Thurston Moore on a variety of outings, including playing violin on Mr. Moore’s solo records “Trees Outside the Academy” and “Demolished Thoughts” and recording and touring with his band Chelsea Light Moving.

Her most recent collaborative album is with Body/Head’s Bill Nace, which came out on Nace’s Open Mouth imprint earlier this year. “Flicker At the Stations” on Drawing Room represents Lubelski’s most current full-length offering.

Black Dots Circles Bend High Rise Tunnel Visions Mark the Spot The Spiral Spins Sound on Sound Soft Focus The Measure, the Decline Impositions Vacant City

“Flickers At The Station”:

There are experimental musicians that know how to well craft the best of pop music, and there are pop musicians that know how to experiment at upper echelons of instinct. Samara Lubelski is both of these musicians in one. It may be a bold statement, but yes, it is true, every word. Her breadth of experience in both of the otherworldly sides of these spheres grants her an enlightened gift in song writing. It is elegant and transporting, and it coalesces in that golden new age of purple and orange psychic pop music that ducks its head into the present realm from time to time.

“Flickers At The Station” is an album that showcases Lubelski at a creative apex. Beautiful and breathtaking, it is a forever keeper of a baroque pop record. It’s late evening music. It’s early morning revelation music. It’s a glorious day unto itself. The pure connection between Lubelski’s outré improv and instrumentation and her pop–psychic songwriting is in complete harmony.

Recorded in 2017 in Germany with Lubelski’s forever time collaborators, Metabolismus, and others, “Flickers At The Station” is an essential statement of baroque glory. It’s a cerebrally sensed listening expedition with all future endings open and most hopeful. Bless yourself with this one.

Sarah Mary Chadwick – Sugar Still Melts in the Rain

Multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Sarah Mary Chadwick is not a new face to Melbourne’s music community. After moving to Australia from her native New Zealand to pursue a career in music, Sarah spent a decade fronting the grunge band Batrider. Eventually becoming tired of the collaborative requirements intrinsic to band life, Sarah shifted her focus to songwriting independently, drawing inspiration from “weird old New Zealand musicians” like Peter Jefferies, Chris Knox, and Australia’s Pip Proud and the way they tinker away and work for decades for “little to no commercial success.” This inspiration is obvious in Sarah’s performance as she simultaneously savors and mocks the pedestal that her creativity affords her, acknowledging that “it’s a position of power being on a microphone” and how “it’s a desperate demand to be seen. It’s funny and really sad.”

To listen to Sarah’s music is to be a quiet observer to her thoughts on love, death and mental health. Sometimes this anguish bears itself in sullen, quiet moments, but more often torment manifests at the break of Sarah’s voice as she sing-shouts painfully vulnerable, self-aware lyrics. This is all front and center on Chadwick’s newest Sugar Still Melts In The Rain. From the album’s moody (though by SMC standards, uplifting) first track ‘Flow Over Me’ to its larger moments where Sarah cries ‘raise your glass to my health and to everyone going away’ in the title track, the album is undeniably committed to the uncomplicated, relying solely on piano, keys, bass and percussion.

Flow Over Me It's Never Ok Bauble on a Chain Five Months Waiting on a Season Wind Wool I Won't Say Goodbye Sugar Still Melts in the Rain Dancing Slowly Felt My Heart Become Foam Lost, Overwhelmed and Unsafe

Learning that Sarah’s songwriting is thoroughly autobiographical is perhaps more unnerving than her artistic process of watching sexually charged movies to inspire her pornographic art. She drinks, she watches porn, she draws and she writes. When the blur of the evening fades, what remains is a colorful orgy on the page and Sarah’s recollections immortalized in ‘Wind Wool’, “oh no I’m losing memory, did we just piss away time? And does it matter anyway, I’ll die, you died, we die…”. To Sarah Mary Chadwick, all tragedy is comedy.

Sugar Still Melts In The Rain marks her first release for her new label Sinderlyn (home to Homeshake, Jaye Bartell and Tim Cohen). Having already released three solo records on Bedroom Suck, Siltbreeze and Rice Is Nice, this album is her 4th solo work. It was recorded and mixed by friend, musician and filmmaker Geoffrey O’Connor in Vanity Lair and Phaedra Studios in Melbourne. The album came together so quickly partly as a result of the duo’s commitment to efficiency and partly due to Sarah’s lack of attachment to the idea of “the perfect vocal take.” She knows she isn’t a virtuoso; tongue firmly in check, she is quick to reference those limitations mockingly. Yet, it’s within those boundaries that she thrives, disinterested in the perfect take in lieu of her best take – unique, somber and raw.

Emm Gryner – Only of Earth

Emm Gryner is known for her typical folk pop stylings. Her latest project has a little divergence from the norm. It   s a 3-part series known as Only of Earth. It will be accompanied by graphic novels and other literature to really set the scene of what Gryner is going for.

Prologue Shadow GIrl Imagination Blood Balloons Something Tells Me A Mission The Passing of Ayro Whatever Wind The Spark Comets Call Silent Steps Reprise

The project begins with Days of Games. It delivers a very different feel than what Gryner fans are used to. The inspiration comes from the birth of a child, the death of the iconic David Bowie, and the passing of Greg Lowe. All of these can be felt throughout the album. A former member of David Bowie   s band, Gryner goes for a style much more similar to his, using heavy rock guitar riffs, usually played by Greg Lowe, and adding a synthesizer to give it a more space adventure feel.  The guitar work fits in perfectly with the rock stylings of the    70s and    80s, in a form that would make Bowie proud.

Imagination    is the first single from the album and helps to remind the listener that this is a science fiction album. The whole album really tells a story, and it is in full swing by the time    A Mission    rolls around. It has a beautiful guitar intro that pairs perfectly with  Gryner   s voice. Lowe   s guitar work comes through though and provides for the serious tone of what Gryner is saying. He helps to establish the idea of the mission by showing his guitar work to add a dangerous factor, but it also feels triumphant. This means that the mission Gryner is singing about will be accomplished, though it may be difficult.

The Spark    begins with a powerful guitar solo that rolls right into a rock riff that can   t be easily forgotten. This song actually seems to feel a lot like    War Pigs    by Black Sabbath. It does so by splitting up lines in the verse with a heavy guitar part and impressive guitar soloing throughout. Gryner   s voice just adds to the feel of a powerful classic rock sound because of the reverb added to it.

Though Days of Games is a different take to what Gryner is usually putting out, it still has some legs to stand on. It escapes the folk genre completely, but it does a very good job as making an appearance as a rock album with a very classic vibe.

Daniel Daniel – The Lonesome Hollow

RISING NASHVILLE ARTIST DANIEL DANIEL’S OMINOUS, DARK HUMOR-TINGED AMERICANA OUTING IS, IN PART, AN ODE TO RAMBLING WESTERNS AND DESERT LANDSCAPES.

Doctor, Please Howlin' at the Moon Waves Go Easy Money, Money, Money Darkness The Lonesome Hollow Where Is the Key? Superstar Honey, I The First Train

Rising Americana artist Daniel Daniel is saddling up with a brand new single before the release of his debut full-length in May. Entitled “The Lonesome Hollow”, the Nashville songwriter whips up a foreboding, windswept landscape for his protagonist to wander. In many ways, it feels reminiscent of western tales of old, though with enough contemporary shine to land it among the best concept pieces of a similar ilk, like Lord Huron’s Strange Trails. Daniel has teamed up with some of the greats to make the dark western swing tune possible, too, including award-winning recording engineer Mike Piersante (Adele, the Civil Wars) and producer Matt Williams.

Accompanying the release of “The Lonesome Hollow” single is a music video directed by Daniel himself. In it, we follow a man’s (Charles Trueblood) journey through the old-school western thrills of a small mining town not too far away from Phoenix, Arizona. There’s humor involved, as well as darkness. On the overall, it’s an astoundingly well-shot thinking piece as we see Trueblood’s character move from one phase in his wanderings to another. Stunning videography showcasing the natural Arizonan landscape being interspersed throughout helps set variances in tone in place with perfect pacing.

“This was one of those songs that seemed to fall from the sky,” Daniel says. “The line ‘Going down to the lonesome hollow’ came into my head and the rest of the song, and character, flowed from there.”

“I seemed to catch this character on his tumultuous journey, and it wasn’t my place to ask a lot of questions. There’s a certain ambiguity to the tune that wouldn’t allow for anything to be said other than what was said. I certainly felt like I was a spectator on this song rather than a participant. The song has served as a springboard both for the other songs on this record but also new material I am working on.”

Palace Winter – Nowadays

Arriving in adulthood is a bitter-sweet experience. Abandoned childhood fascinations make way for tough life lessons. But also the hope and potential that comes with taking charge  of both your life and other ‘ s.

Birth Take Shelter Pursuit Of The Ballroom Empire Baltimore Come Back (Left Behind) The Accident Demon Acting Like Lovers Kenopsia

These are the central themes in Nowadays, the second full-length album from Palace Winter. Copenhagen based Australian singer-songwriter Carl Coleman and Danish producer and classically trained pianist Caspar Hesselager have built on their dynamic relationship to create an album that swells between tender ballads and high-energy melodies.

Built around floating keys, rhythm guitar and an insisting beat, they forge a bright and gloomy album that further develops the group   s unique sound, which has so far won them international plaudits from BBC 6 Music, NME and The Guardian, as well as Gaffa in Denmark, where they are based.

It opens with    Birth   , a mellow track whose minor key synths invite you into the duo   s atmospheric and melancholic universe. This is reinforced by the following number    Take Shelter   , a choral death ballad about confronting grief and coping with loss.

Fans of Palace Winter   s energetic live shows won   t be disappointed by the    The Ballroom   , the tale of a narcissistic and evil rock singer. Its vigour is reminiscent of the ecstatic    Positron    from their 2016 album Waiting for the World to Turn     songs that need to be played driving into the sunset with the windows rolled down as the world behind you burns.

Their 80s influence shines through on    Empire   , and    Come Back (Left Behind)   , whose bright notes contrast with lyrics that dwell on the challenges of anxiety, and coming to terms with the loss of a lover and feeling like you   ll never escape the fog of grief.

The album continues its exploration of deeply human themes in    Baltimore    (the experience of a suffocating love),    The Accident    (the realisation that life isn   t as bad as it seems),    Demon    (overcoming self-doubt and fear) and    Acting Like Lovers    (how sharing a traumatic experience can bring people closer).

Coleman lifts the distortion on his vocals for the final track    Kenopsia   , an eerie duet with Hesselager   s keys. It   s echoey reverberations appear to bounce within an enormous space that the two can   t fill     it   s full of soul and spectral emptiness.

Nowadays mulls over the challenges we face just trying to be alive in the present moment in a world full of distraction. You can   t swipe your way to happiness     you have to lift your eyes first.
