Century Thief is an indie folk/rock collective based out of Toronto, Ontario. With three principal songwriters and a variety of supporting instruments, including trumpet and multi layered vocal harmonies; the group arranges diversely thoughtful songs. Drawing on influences like Broken Social Scene, Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Arcade Fire, and more, the groups performances can range from moody, soft and lyrical to noisy and energetic. The songs often have an emphasis on lyrics, but sometimes veer into the instrumental, relying on unique instrumentation to provide layered soundscapes.
In 2010 the band started as an acoustic effort, focusing on the individual songwriters, often showcasing the multi-layered harmonies. As more members joined and the band evolved the shows began to be more about tying together the separate songwriters with driving rock energy, dancing between genres and sometimes cropped-exploring controlled dissonance. They often use transitions to build unique sets that flow strategically for impact and coherency. Throughout Century Thief’s development they have maintained a focus on songwriting and multi-layered vocal harmonies.
Since 2010 Century Thief have released one studio EP, Plume, a four song acoustic effort. They have also released one studio album, Stay Stranger, under the moniker Mike Legere and Bury the Hatchet, recorded at Chemical Sound in Toronto, as well as a four song demo Wings, and have been featured on an electric four song EP. The three EP’s have been physically released together as an EP Anthology.
In 2013 the group went on tour to the east coast of Canada, released a southern souls video, and played throughout Ontario. They’ve also participated in many Ontario festivals, including NXNE, Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, In the Soil, Toronto Festival of Beers, and Out of the Box. They frequently play around southern Ontario, where they are based.
Century Thief has strived to push beyond the limits of the conventional band by working with artists in other mediums to create a unique and fully submursive live experience. In 2015 they debuted ‘Former Logic’ at In the Soil festival in St Catharines. This show melds three mediums of art into a cohesive perspective on the individuals relationship with their physical environment. This includes film, installation and music that were created together to explore the theme.
Century Thief’s debut full length album ‘Reverie’, co-produced by Matthew Drost, was completed in early 2015. This 13 song album is the bands first unified release as Century Thief and showcases the bands true collective identity. They will be touring through Ontario and Quebec to support this release in the fall of 2015.
Century Thief is focused around the songwriting of Mike Legere, Kathryn Kearns, and Omar Shabbar. Other members include Adam Reid, Jason Cliffen and Alex Furlot.
